My poor shell bucket has been empty. Shelling on the SWFL coast has been sort of flat the last few months. Good shelling requires a combination of things. Tides, winds, moon phase all play a part. The biggest factor is location, location, location. Sanibel is the shelling epicenter on the west coast of Florida with the best seismic shelling waves extending to Cayo Costa on the north and south to Bonita Beach, Naples, & Marco Island. The really sweet shelling spots can only be reached by boat. That's why I practically jumped for joy when shelling guide Capt. Brian Holaway of Captiva/Sanibel Island invited me out for a shelling excursion next week. Heading out in the month of May (his favorite month). Capt. Brian likes the warmer temps & the clearer waters. He says "the water seems more alive with stingrays & tarpons cruising by, the sea grass is floating on the surface of the water, & the days are longer." ReplyDeleteAnd guess what?? Looks like our Blew Bayou will be taking me to Sanibel Island very soon to let me explore that cool shelling heaven! She will prolly set sail the first of Feb. and my first stop will be there!!! Updates to follow!!
You are so blessed by nature. So beautifully blessed.

Great photos. Nice way to spend your Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this! Learned something plus...it reminded me of all the days I spent beach-combing along the shores of Santa Rosa Island near Destin 30 years ago! It was pristine back then... one of those treasures of the mind now.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!

Learning something new every time I stop here! Part of my family is here for a couple weeks and they've really gotten into shelling this year. Might be fun for us to check out the end of Manasota Key...Hmmmm, yes. Sounds like a winner...

It's amazing the history that is in those shell layers.
ReplyDeleteSo, I have one question? Do ya think that big ol' thing is going to be dredging up my Junonia?
ReplyDeleteWow, that is amazing about the sharks' teeth..and what an amazing way to spend Christmas...Wishing you a beautiful and blessed 2011.
